According to most sources, including his own father, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes did not graduate from Texas Tech University.

Mahomes played two seasons for the Red Raiders before being drafted by the Chiefs in 2017. He helped lead Texas Tech to a bowl game in each of his two years there, and is the school’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns.

However, Mahomes left school early to enter the NFL draft, and did not finish his degree. His father has said that Mahomes plans to eventually get his degree, but as of now he has not done so.

Patrick Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas, on September 17, 1995. He attended Whitehouse High School, where he played football and baseball. In football, he was a three-year starter at quarterback and led his team to the state playoffs as a senior. In baseball, he was a catcher and infielder. Mahomes was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign and instead enrolled at Texas Tech University to play college football.

At Texas Tech, Mahomes played for the Red Raiders from 2014 to 2016. He was a backup quarterback his first two years before becoming the starter as a junior in 2015. As a junior, he completed 378 of 598 passes for 4,653 yards with 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also rushed for 12 touchdowns. As a senior in 2016, he completed 369 of 559 passes for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 12 touchdowns.

Mahomes’ Time at Texas Tech

Mahomes played college football at Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016. As a freshman, he was the backup to Davis Webb, but he took over the starting role in his sophomore year. In his junior year, Mahomes threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns, leading the Red Raiders to a 7–6 record. He also ran for 12 touchdowns that season. As a senior, he threw for 4,653 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Mahomes’ NFL Career

In 2017, Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round with the tenth overall pick. He signed a four-year contract with the team. Mahomes made his first career start in Week 17 of the 2017 NFL season against the Denver Broncos, completing 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception in a 27–24 overtime win. With that game, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards in his first career start. He was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. In 2018, Mahomes started all 16 regular season games, as well as all three playoff games. He set multiple franchise records, including most passing yards (5,097) and passing touchdowns (50) in a single season. He was named First Team All-Pro and was voted MVP by both the Associated Press and Pro Football Writers Association.

In short, we do not know for sure whether Mahomes graduated from Texas Tech. While he did attend the school for three years, there is no record of him receiving a degree. Mahomes may have opted to leave early to pursue his NFL career, or he may have simply not finished his degree. Either way, we cannot say for certain that Mahomes is a college graduate.
