Early life and beginnings in the music industry
Tech N9ne was born Aaron Dontez Yates in Kansas City, Missouri, on November 8, 1971. He began rapping at a young age, and his first performance was alongside fellow Kansas City rapper Kutdown. In the early 1990s, Yates joined a group called Black Mafia, which also included rappers such as Jessie Dolce and Manny B. After the group disbanded, Yates continued to pursue a career in music, and he eventually released his debut album, The Calm Before the Storm, in 1999.
Yates’ second album, Absolute Power, was released in 2002. The album’s success led to a record deal with Strange Music, a label founded by tech entrepreneur Travis O’Guin. Since signing with Strange Music, Tech N9ne has released a total of 20 albums, includingCollabos albums and EPs. He has also been featured on numerous songs by other artists, such as Lil Wayne’s “My Homies Still” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright.”
