March Madness is almost upon us, and everyone is wondering which teams will make the cut. While there are always a few surprises, most experts have a pretty good idea of which teams are likely to make it to the NCAA tournament. One team that is on the bubble is Virginia Tech. The Hokies have had a strong season, but they’re not necessarily a lock for the Big Dance. Here’s a look at their chances.
The Team’s Record
The team’s record is 21-9, including a 12-6 record in ACC play. They’re currently ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and have been as high as No. 16 this season.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament, also known and branded as NCAA March Madness, is a single-elimination tournament played each spring in the United States, currently featuring 68 college basketball teams from the Division I level of the NCAA ( storyline), to determine the national championship. The tournament was created in 1939 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and was the idea of Ohio State University coach Harold Olsen. Played mostly during March, it has become one of the most famous annual sporting events in the United States.
The tournament teams include champions from 32 Division I conferences (who receive automatic bids), and 36 teams which are awarded at-large berths. These “at-large” teams are chosen by an NCAA selection committee. Generally, a team that wins its conference tournament is guaranteed an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. An exception to this rule occurred in 2016, when Yale won both the Ivy League regular season title and conference tournament, but was not selected for the NCAA tournament because its Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) number did not meet the minimum standard for selection.
The 68 teams are divided into four regions and organized into a single-elimination “bracket”, which pre-determines, when a team wins a game, which team it will face next. Each team is “seeded”, or ranked, within its region from 1 to 16. After an initial four games between eight lower-ranked teams, the tournament occurs during the course of three weekends, at pre-selected neutral sites across the United States. Each weekend begins on Thursday and ends on Sunday night. The final four round of games , held during Easter weekend , features two semifinal games between Region 1 vs Region 2 , and Region 3 vs Region 4 . These games are followed by championship game between those two winners . A total of 63 games are played over a three-week period
When Virginia Tech lost to Duke in the ACC tournament semifinals, many college basketball fans wondered if the Hokies would make the NCAA tournament. Virginia Tech has a strong basketball program, but the ACC is a tough conference and the Hokies didn’t have any marquee wins this season.
The selection committee takes many factors into account when choosing which teams will make the tournament, but one of the most important is strength of schedule. Virginia Tech’s schedule was rated as the 13th toughest in the country, so the Hokies have a good chance of making the field.
Another important factor is recent performance. Virginia Tech lost four of its last six games, so that could be a strike against them. However, two of those losses were to Duke, one of the best teams in the country. The selection committee also looks at how teams perform in their conference tournament, so Virginia Tech’s run to the ACC semifinals could help their case.
Ultimately, it’s up to the selection committee to decide which teams will make the tournament, but Virginia Tech has a good chance of being one of them.
It is still too early to tell if Virginia Tech will make March Madness.
As of now, they are not ranked in the top 25 teams in the country.
They have a few quality wins against good teams, but also some bad losses against worse teams.
They will need to turn things around and start winning more consistently if they want to make a run at the NCAA tournament.
